Operate Breathing Apparatus

Course Description

This course applies to persons who are required to wear breathing apparatus for part of their job because they are working in a confined space, with hazardous gases/vapours, in irrespirable atmospheres or for other applications requiring the wearing of breathing apparatus.

A Statement of Attainment and wallet card issued to individual participants who successfully complete the requirements of the unit of competency and have a valid Unique Student Identifier (USI)

Frequently Asked Questions

If we are providing training at your workplace participants will be required to bring any of their normal protective clothing with them. They will also require photo identification to verify their enrolment details.

If you are attending a public course please ensure to wear long pants and preferably boots. Participants will be required to wear a hard hat for some activities, if you have your own you may prefer to bring it with you however we do have communal ones available.

Our public Breathing Apparatus courses typically kick off at 08:30am unless otherwise advertised. It’s advised to arrive 15mins early to allow time to sort out any enrolment issues and get yourself setup for the day.

Entry Requirements

The ability to;

  • Interpret any permits or other documentation associated with the wearing of breathing apparatus for the job.
  • Writing is required to the level of completing required workplace reports.
  • Numeracy is required to enable the determination of the available working time from a breathing apparatus set and similar activities.
  • Wear harnesses and/or other PPE as required
  • Perform manual handling tasks and strenuous activities

Those that suffer from claustrophobia may find it difficult to wear Breathing Apparatus and fulfil the requirements of the course.   If all requirements cannot be achieved a Statement of Attainment cannot be issued.

Additional entry requirements for Blended Learning.

  • Computer skills such as web navigation and basic typing
  • Access to a computer or tablet with a stable internet connection
  • Webcam and Preferably a Head Set / Earphones – Virtual Classroom only

Prerequisites

There are no prerequisites for this unit.

Facial Hair

In line with Australian Standards, PARCOR can still train participants with facial hair, but the training and notes will ensure that participants understand that facial seal requirements must be met before entry into any hazardous area.

Participant Responsibilities

Participants shall be required to complete an online enrolment process including providing a valid USI. Participants must provide photo ID to verify their identity. Participants shall be required to attend the entire session and complete all assessment activities.

Delivery Method and Duration

Face to Face

Face to Face training will be conducted over a period of 6 hours including both theory and practical components. Training can be conducted both on or offsite provided a training room and confined (or simulated space) are available for use.

PARCOR caters for training onsite throughout Victoria including areas such as Melbourne, Geelong, Portland, Warrnambool, Colac, Bendigo, Ballarat, Horsham, Sale, Bairnsdale, Echuca, Mildura, Wangaratta, Dandenong, Frankston and Traralgon.

To ensure a quality and safe learning environment, our Operate Breathing Apparatus courses are capped at 8 participants.

Assessment

Assessment of knowledge will be conducted by use of a workbook and verbal questioning. Participants will also be required to demonstrate competence through a range of practical activities.
